Overview

Course Description

The solutions to the present and future health challenges, very much depend on building effective partnerships and harnessing the untapped global power of ordinary people who care about improving their health. Involving people in their healthcare has been proven to be effective in health promotion.

This course highlights the building of skills of clinicians (Nurses and Midwives) in patient and family engagement to improve their competence in dealing with their clients and patients. It covers topics such as patient and people-centered care, the concept of patient and family engagement, factors influencing engagement and strategies and tools for effective engagement. Motivational interviewing, a person-centered counselling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change is also briefly introduced in this section. These skills empower the client to make guided decisions which they personally own.

Despite its potential, however, there are many barriers to engagement.
