  2. Composition of birth plan and its importance to mitigate disrespect during labour Definition of labour
  3. Stages of labour: Identify key areas of disrespect during labour and delivery
  • Pain relief (Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological pain relief)
  • Vagina examination
  • Use of preferred position by client during the second stage
  • Uninformed Episiotomy
  • Informed consent and decision making
  • Reception of the client and birth companion
  • Management of first stage of labour
  • Monitoring using the partograph
  • Profile of the client
  • Foetal condition
  • Progress of labour
  • Maternal condition
  • Plotting and interpretation of the partograph

 

Instructional Strategies / Teaching-Learning Approaches:

  1. Online: Participants would be taken through health assessment delineating areas of disrespect and how to mitigate them and details of birth preparedness emphasizing on birth plan. Effective communication: The do’s and do not during care
  2. Face-to-face interaction: Participant will be asked to perform physical and abdominal examination with respect to RMC. (OSCE).

 

Assessment Strategies

  • Pretest – 5 questions
  • Post-test -10 questions (80% to pass mark)

Course Description

This unit is structured to equip midwives with knowledge on Respectful Maternity Care (RMC). It will also equip them with the appropriate skill and attitude to exhibit when providing high quality maternal care during antenatal and labour
